David Axelrod’s 1969 masterpiece Songs of Experience transforms the poetry of William Blake into a darkly cinematic fusion of orchestral grandeur, psych-influenced rock, and slow-burning rhythm. Across tracks including “The Human Abstract,” “London” and “A Divine Image,” strings, horns and a panoply of LA’s finest session players converge in a visionary Capitol recording whose brooding sonic undercurrent would resonate through generations of hip-hop producers and crate-diggers, and was sampled by legends such as DJ Shadow, Madlib, Cypress Hill, and The Avalanches.
